The 5th Spelling Bee in HIS|Piece Together a World of Words
Spelling Bee

When the warm breeze sweeps across our campus, the 5th Spelling Bee at Hailiang International School unfolds like a wondrous vocabulary party, drawing students from around the globe.

On this stage, individuals of diverse skin tones and native tongues converge, each bringing their own cultural lexicon treasures.
Every word becomes a radiant star, constructing a bridge that transcends borders and unites nations, showcasing the distinct allure of the English language amidst global cultural exchange.

Hailiang School for Children of Foreign Personnel consistently upholds a philosophy of educational excellence, integrating English instruction into a wide array of vibrant campus activities. By adopting international English curricula and leveraging advanced teaching technologies, the school creates an immersive English learning environment for its students.

This English Spelling Bee serves as a vivid embodiment of the school’s educational philosophy. Furthermore, the school regularly organizes activities such as English clubs and English speech contests, enabling students to continuously enhance their comprehensive English proficiency through practical application.

In their day-to-day teaching, teachers also focus on creating a multicultural learning environment, enabling students to learn about the cultural backgrounds of different countries and thereby better understand and use English vocabulary.

The competition featured both Basic and Challenge categories to cater to students of varying English proficiency levels, attracting teams across four Basic-level and six Challenge-level groups. Comprising three rounds, the event was thoughtfully designed to let students experience the charm of the English language in a delightful atmosphere.
Round One Repeating Bee
In this round, contestants stand with their backs to the screen; they must repeat and correctly spell each word within 15 seconds of the examiner reading it aloud. This places a significant demand on listening comprehension and immediate recall, requiring contestants to focus intently on capturing the pronunciation and rapidly assembling the correct spelling.
Many students demonstrated the ability to accurately spell challenging IELTS vocabulary; notably, Yang Yingying from Thailand secured first place in the individual challenge category by successfully spelling 24 difficult IELTS words in a row.
This achievement was by no means a coincidence; rather, it serves as compelling proof of the school’s long-standing commitment to English instruction and its use of scientifically sound teaching methods.
Round Two Acting Bee
The second round featured a fun “charades-style” game that brought the event’s atmosphere to a fever pitch. Students from various countries vividly acted out complex words using expressive body language and seamless teamwork. On stage, participants gestured and moved energetically, striving to convey information across language barriers, while the audience watched with bated breath, cheering for their ingenuity and brilliant coordination.
This activity not only honed the students’ English communication skills but also deepened their understanding of how different cultures express themselves. This approach—closely integrating English learning with cultural exchange—is a hallmark of the school’s educational philosophy.

Round Three: Leading Bee
The third round featured a buzzer-style competition: with two clues and a 30-second time limit, it was a contest of both speed and wit. At the host’s signal, students raced to jot down words and hit their buzzers, creating a tense and thrilling atmosphere. International students demonstrated quick reflexes, engaging in fierce competition fueled by their solid vocabulary and rapid thinking.
This round not only tested the students’ reaction speeds but also served as a comprehensive assessment of the vocabulary they had accumulated over time, highlighting their shared passion for and tireless pursuit of English learning across diverse cultural backgrounds.
At HIS, language learning is never limited to a single classroom or subject. While students explore the beauty of English through competitions like the Spelling Bee, they are also encouraged to experience learning Mandarin as another meaningful pathway to cross-cultural communication, helping them build confidence, broaden global perspectives, and connect with different cultures more deeply.
